The oncology unit at McAllen Medical Center provides nursing care for both adult and geriatric patients. The 27-bed unit provides a comprehensive range of services, including treatment for a number of oncologic diseases and helping acutely ill patients recover from oncological interventions. This includes patients who need surgery, who have symptoms that require further evaluation during their hospital stay, or those who are receiving cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. Patients who need cardiac or closer respiratory observation are transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or telemetry.
Among the most common conditions treated at the center are:
- Lung cancer
- Breast cancer
- Post-operative surgical care
- Other oncology or hematology diagnoses and conditions needing intervention or treatment
Patients in the oncology unit at McAllen Medical Center receive advanced medical care in an environment that encourages them to focus on the positive and helps them find the strength they need throughout their treatment. Because patients often bring friends or family members with them, the unit was designed with large living room-like waiting areas, and each treatment area is equipped with a television.
Advanced Cancer Treatment
Experienced, board-certified specialists use advanced techniques and technology to diagnose and treat blood disorders such as leukemias, lymphomas, lung cancer, breast cancer, neutropenia, anemia and other oncology or hematology conditions. Treatment includes chemotherapy, biotherapy, surgical intervention and supportive care.
Specially Trained Staff
All nurses are specially trained in both oncology care and chemotherapy administration.
All Private Rooms
Large private rooms come equipped with sleeper beds for overnight guests.
The Recreational Day Room
Our Day Room provides a comfortable place for patients, families and friends to visit in an intimate setting. A large-screen television and a computer with internet access are available for families and patients to use at any time. The lounge also has cards, board games, reading material and toys.
Private Treatment Areas
The new unit provides privacy and comfort for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and treatment for oncology or hematology disorders. New treatment areas allow for private conversations between patients, providers and family members.
